Listen again to my Sunday Nation show on Sounds of Urban London radio here!
The full track playlist is listed at the end of this article.
This week I was joined by special guests Marcia Rigg-Samuel and Patricia Lamour.
Marcia is the elder sister of Sean Rigg, who was killed in police custody four years ago. She and her family have campaigned for justice, believing that Brixton police and the NHS mental services failed their brother.
This week an inquest delivered a damning verdict which blamed police for contributing to Sean Rigg’s death by causing positional asphyxia and failing to respond to his rapidly deteriorating health.
Marcia spoke about her experiences trying to uncover the truth about what happened to her brother, and what her next moves are to get justice.
Patricia is director of the Aspire Education Group, and has experience of black organisations attempting to set up ‘Free Schools’. This week the Government turned down an application by the Diaspora High School because their achievement targets were “too high.”
Patricia has followed the free school debate and taken part in putting together applications. She is appalled that every single bid by an African or Caribbean group to set up a school as been turned down.
She also spoke about school exclusions and the future of supplementary schools in the community.
